The John Dugan “Grandpa” mask was plastic surgeon W.E. Barnes first venture into the world of special effects make-up. Creating and applying each mask required an intensive five-hour process, and the filmmakers were limited to 3 masks. Worse, the masks were delicate, and because they were glued on with spirit gum and disintegrated during the removal process, they were single use items. That meant the filmmakers had to shoot all of Dugan’s scenes in three long sessions. The infamous Dinner Table scene, the last of Dugan’s scenes and the last of the “Grandpa” masks, became a 32 hour marathon shoot.
